Deku Stick on B

Deku Stick on B is a glitch that places a Deku Stick in Link's B button slot, bypassing the normal requirement for the Master Sword. This seemingly simple trick opens up numerous sequence breaks and is a crucial component of many advanced glitch techniques in Ocarina of Time.

What is Deku Stick on B?

Normally, Adult Link's B button is reserved for the Master Sword (or Biggoron's Sword/Giant's Knife). The Deku Stick on B glitch exploits various game mechanics to place a Deku Stick—a Child Link item—in this slot, even as an adult.

This enables:

  • Bottle Adventure setups
  • Reverse Bottle Adventure techniques
  • Swordless Link playthroughs
  • Various sequence breaks and glitch chains

How It Works

The B Button Slot

The B button slot has special properties:

  • It's meant to always hold a sword for Adult Link
  • The game doesn't properly validate what gets placed there
  • Certain sequences can leave the slot blank or with unexpected items

Platform Differences

PlatformBehaviorNotes
N64 (All versions)Game freezesPulling out Deku Stick as Adult crashes the game
GameCubeGlitchy stickWields a glitched Deku Stick

Methods to Obtain Deku Stick on B

Method 1: Lon Lon Ranch (Swordless)

This method requires never having equipped a sword through the equipment screen:

  1. Perform the Swordless Door of Time Skip to become Adult without the Master Sword
  2. Enter Lon Lon Ranch and pay to ride a horse
  3. Climb on any horse (doesn't have to be Epona)
  4. This gives you a blank B button
  5. Save and quit (or die after dimming B by entering water/climbing)
  6. Return and pay to ride again with a blank (not dimmed) B button
  7. You now have Deku Stick on B

Important: This resets if you savewarp, deathwarp, or fail a trade item sequence.

Method 2: Stealing the Fishing Rod

A more accessible method for casual players:

  1. Go to the Fishing Pond in Lake Hylia
  2. Steal the Fishing Rod using specific techniques
  3. Exit the pond
  4. Jump into water to gray out the B button
  5. Return to the pond, then exit again
  6. You now have Deku Stick on B

Method 3: Master Sword Bottle Dupe

The most reliable method that persists through warps:

  1. Obtain a bottle normally
  2. Catch something in the bottle (bugs, fish)
  3. Swing the bottle at a catchable target
  4. Mid-swing, open the equipment menu and equip Master Sword
  5. This dupes the bottle over the Master Sword slot
  6. The B button now has a bottle, which can be converted to stick

Converting to Bottle on B

Once you have Deku Stick on B, you can convert it to a Bottle on B for even more applications:

Quick-Draw Bottle Duplication

  1. Drop bugs or fish, then pull out the empty bottle
  2. Execute a Quick Draw with your sword
  3. Perform a shield swipe
  4. This duplicates the bottle over your B button weapon

Multiple setups exist:

  • Shallow water method
  • Shielded damage method
  • Time stop method
  • Text box method
  • Epona method
  • Iron Boots method

Glitched Damage Value

A powerful side effect: getting a broken stick after Quick Putaway with a Deku Stick gives a glitched damage value of 16171617.

Tips and Troubleshooting

Common Issues

Game Freezes (N64):

  • Don't actually pull out the Deku Stick as Adult on N64
  • Use it only as a setup for other glitches

B Button Resets:

  • The Lon Lon Ranch method resets on savewarp/deathwarp
  • Use the bottle dupe method for persistence

Gray/Dimmed B Button:

  • Enter water or climb something to dim the button
  • Some setups require dimmed, others require non-dimmed

Practice Tips

  1. Learn the bottle dupe method first—it's most versatile
  2. Practice the Quick-Draw timing separately
  3. Understand which version you're playing (affects behavior)
  4. Use the Fishing Rod method on 3DS for easier setup
